Before the Chinese Year of the Dragon, we had the privilege of taking a tour of a Yantai Huang-Bohai School. The school serves as hub inter-disciplinary and 21st Century skills development. A school for schools, Yantai Huang-Bohai Sea New Area Comprehensive Practice School (for all primary, middle and secondary school students) is quite impressive.
在迎接龙年春节之际，我们有幸参观了携手创造变革 – 烟台黄渤海新区中小学生综合实践学校, 这是一个致力于跨学科和21世纪技能培养的先锋。作为一个学校中的“学校”，烟台黄渤海新区中小学生综合实践学校(覆盖所有小学、中学和高中阶段学生）令人印象深刻。

On a cold winter afternoon, the warm welcome of the vice-principal, Miss Eve Lu, was enough to make us feel cozy. Miss Lu’s pride in her work and her vision are evident and quite justified. During the tour, given personally by Miss Lu herself, you feel, when she speaks (in fluent English), that she is the embodiment of the philosophy of education at the school. She believes in the mission of the school. She knows how the school, its staff and its facilities are to serve not just the students who come there, but also the community and society at large.
在寒冷冬日的午后，副校长鲁小姐的热情欢迎让我们倍感温暖。吕小姐对她的工作及其愿景的自豪感溢于言表，而这种自豪感是完全合理的。在吕小姐亲自引领的校园之旅中，她流利的英语让人感受到她是这所学校教育理念的鲜活体现。她深信学校的使命，了解学校、员工及其设施如何服务于学生、社区乃至整个社会。
The visit started with an immediate tour of the school’s facilities which included five floors of learning classrooms designed for 21st century active learning. The school boasts an on-site dorm with a capacity of near five hundred residents. Students share very neat accommodation facilities, with ensuite teachers’ quarters on each floor. An entire visiting school can stay for a whole week engaging in collaborative active learning. The integrated provision includes food served morning, afternoon and evening in a very modern canteen. All areas are purpose-built with the necessary resources and good heating to keep students warm. The auditorium, housed in a separate building, has a capacity of over seven hundred, and is perfectly designed for any kind of event. On our tour, we observed groups of students using the stage of the auditorium for fun group games, guided by very professional and skilled teachers.
我们的参观从对学校设施的详细考察开始，包括五层楼的教室，均为21世纪积极学习而特别设计。学校设有一个可容纳近五百名人的园区宿舍。学生们共享整洁的住宿设施，每层楼都配备了教师专用住所。整个访问学校的团队可以在此住上一整周，参与协作式的积极学习活动。综合服务设施包括提供早、午、晚餐的现代化食堂。所有区域均为特定目的而建造，配备必要资源和良好的供暖系统，确保学生温暖舒适。能容纳七百多人的礼堂设在单独的建筑内，非常适合举办各类活动。我们在参观过程中看到，一些学生小组在礼堂舞台上进行着由极富专业素养和技能的教师指导的团队游戏。
Something else stands out in this environment. Yantai Huang-Bohai has set up an outdoor scaffolding platform that students can climb and engage in fun guided activities. It is a navigation platform that can simply can be described as an aerial maze. The explorative activities on this platform are quite simply, in terms of learning experience and value, excellent: in addition to taking risks, students are simultaneously deploying multi-dimensional skills – navigation, agility, stamina, motor skills … making Choices, building Confidence, Character and developing Critical thinking – key elements of the Chinese new Competence Framework.
在这个环境中，烟台黄渤海新区中小学生综合实践学校的一个特色设施格外引人注目——学校建有一个户外脚手架平台，供学生攀爬并参与引导式的趣味活动，这是一个可以形容为空中迷宫的导航平台。平台上的探索活动不仅仅是学习的经历，更是价值的体现：除了冒险，学生们还在运用多维技能——导航、灵活性、耐力、动作技能……做出选择、建立自信、塑造个性并发展批判性思维——这些都是中国新能力框架的核心要素。
As a school hub, Yantai Huang-Bohai School is a showcase of a government’s commitment to working in partnership, creating and equipping a centre of learning to serve all children at a very low cost. It is also showcase of forward-thinking, investing in innovative ways that continue to make a difference in the lives of children.
