INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

International Women's Day, celebrated annually on March 8th, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

The origins of International Women's Day can be traced back to the early 20th century. In 1910, the idea of an International Women's Day was proposed by Clara Zetkin, a German Marxist theorist, at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. The proposal was unanimously approved by over 100 women from 17 countries, and the first International Women's Day was celebrated in 1911.

Since then, it has not only celebrates women's achievements but also serves as a platform for advocating gender equality and women's rights. The theme for women's day varies each year around issues such as gender-based violence, equal pay, women's representation in leadership, access to education and healthcare, and more.

Did you know?

China has a rich history of strong women who have played significant roles in various aspects of society, politics, culture, and beyond. Here are some notable examples:

Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908): Cixi was one of the most powerful figures in Chinese history. Despite being initially a concubine, she rose to become the de facto ruler of China during the late Qing Dynasty. She was known for modernising China, advocating for reforms such as the establishment of modern schools, railways, and the introduction of Western technology where it was still unpopular at the time.

Qiu Jin (1875-1907): Qiu Jin was a feminist, revolutionary, and poet who fought against the patriarchal norms of her time. She advocated for women's education, independence, and equality in China.

Soong Ching-ling (1893-1981): Soong Ching-ling was the second wife of Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the Republic of China. After Sun's death, she became involved in supporting the Chinese government. Soong Ching-ling played a crucial role in advocating for women's rights and social welfare programs in China.

Liu Yang (born 1978): Liu Yang became China's first female astronaut in 2012 when she was selected for the Shenzhou 9 mission. Her achievement marked a significant milestone in China's space exploration program and inspired many women interested in science and technology.
